RESUMEN

In the realm of ferroelectric memories, HfO2-based ferroelectrics stand out because of their exceptional CMOS compatibility and scalability. Nevertheless, their switchable polarization and switching speed are not on par with those of perovskite ferroelectrics. It is widely acknowledged that defects play a crucial role in stabilizing the metastable polar phase of HfO2. Simultaneously, defects also pin the domain walls and impede the switching process, ultimately rendering the sluggish switching of HfO2. Herein, we present an effective strategy involving acceptor-donor co-doping to effectively tackle this dilemma. Remarkably enhanced ferroelectricity and the fastest switching process ever reported among HfO2 polar devices are observed in La3+-Ta5+ co-doped HfO2 ultrathin films. Moreover, robust macro-electrical characteristics of co-doped films persist even at a thickness as low as 3 nm, expanding potential applications of HfO2 in ultrathin devices. Our systematic investigations further demonstrate that synergistic effects of uniform microstructure and smaller switching barrier introduced by co-doping ensure the enhanced ferroelectricity and shortened switching time. The co-doping strategy offers an effective avenue to control the defect state and improve the ferroelectric properties of HfO2 films.

RESUMEN

Charge density waves (CDWs) involved with electronic and phononic subsystems simultaneously are a common quantum state in solid-state physics, especially in low-dimensional materials. However, CDW phase dynamics in various dimensions are yet to be studied, and their phase transition mechanism is currently moot. Here we show that using the distinct temperature evolution of orientation-dependent ultrafast electron and phonon dynamics, different dimensional CDW phases are verified in CuTe. When the temperature decreases, the shrinking of c-axis length accompanied with the appearance of interchain and interlayer interactions causes the quantum fluctuations (QF) of the CDW phase until 220 K. At T < 220 K, the CDWs on the different ab-planes are finally locked with each other in anti-phase to form a CDW phase along the c-axis. This study shows the dimension evolution of CDW phases in one CDW system and their stabilized mechanisms in different temperature regimes.

RESUMEN

The diaphragm, which is crucial for ventilation, is the primary muscle responsible for inspiration. Patients with severe burns who experience diaphragmatic dysfunction have an increased risk of mortality. Unfortunately, there are currently no effective medications available to prevent or treat this condition. The objective of our study is to utilize bioinformatics to identify potential genes and drugs associated with diaphragmatic dysfunction. In this study, text mining techniques were utilized to identify genes associated with diaphragmatic dysfunction and recovery. Common genes were then analyzed using GO and KEGG pathway analysis, as well as protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis. The obtained hub genes were processed using Cytoscape software, and their expression levels in diaphragmatic dysfunction were validated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) in severe burn rats. Genes that were confirmed were then examined in drug-gene interaction databases to identify potential drugs associated with these genes. Our analysis revealed 96 genes that were common to both the "Diaphragm dysfunction" and "Functional Recovery" text mining concepts. Gene enrichment analysis identified 19 genes representing ten pathways. qRT-PCR showed a significant increase in expression levels of 13 genes, including CCL2, CCL3, CD4, EGF, HGF, IFNG, IGF1, IL17A, IL6, LEP, PTGS2, TGFB1, and TNF, in samples with diaphragmatic dysfunction. Additionally, we found that a total of 56 drugs targeted 5 potential genes. These findings provide new insights into the development of more effective drugs for treating diaphragmatic dysfunction, and also present substantial opportunities for researching new target pharmacology and promoting drugs in the pharmaceutical industry.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Min pigs are a unique genetic resource among local pig breeds in China. They have more excellent characteristics in cold and stress resistance, good meat quality, and a high reproductive rate. However, the genetic structure and driving factors remain unclear in the nucleus herd. In this study, the genetic diversity of Min pigs was studied to reveal the formation mechanism of its unique genetic structure. We hope to protect and develop the genetic resources of Min pigs. METHODS: We analyzed different types of genes to identify the genetic structure and gene introgression pattern of Min pigs. The nuclear DNA dataset includes information on 21 microsatellite loci and 6 Y-chromosome genes, and the mitochondrial D-loop gene is selected to represent maternal lineages. The above genes are all from the nucleus herd of Min pigs. RESULTS: The results of genetic structure identification and analysis of potential exogenous gene introgression patterns indicate that the nucleus herd of Min pigs maintains a high level of genetic diversity (polymorphism information content = 0.713, expected heterozygosity = 0.662, observed heterozygosity = 0.612). Compared with other Asian pig breeds, the formation of Min pig breeds is more special. Gene introgression from European pig breeds to Min pigs has occurred, which is characterized by complete introgression of paternal genes and incomplete introgression of maternal genes. CONCLUSION: Gene introgression caused by cross-breeding is not the main factor leading to the formation of the current genetic structure of Min pigs, but this process has increased the level of genetic diversity in the nucleus herd. Compared with the influence of gene introgression, our research suggest that artificial selection and environmental adaptive evolution make Min pigs form unique genetic characteristics.

RESUMEN

Numerous studies have shown reduced performance in plants that are surrounded by neighbours of the same species1,2, a phenomenon known as conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD)3. A long-held ecological hypothesis posits that CNDD is more pronounced in tropical than in temperate forests4,5, which increases community stabilization, species coexistence and the diversity of local tree species6,7. Previous analyses supporting such a latitudinal gradient in CNDD8,9 have suffered from methodological limitations related to the use of static data10-12. Here we present a comprehensive assessment of latitudinal CNDD patterns using dynamic mortality data to estimate species-site-specific CNDD across 23 sites. Averaged across species, we found that stabilizing CNDD was present at all except one site, but that average stabilizing CNDD was not stronger toward the tropics. However, in tropical tree communities, rare and intermediate abundant species experienced stronger stabilizing CNDD than did common species. This pattern was absent in temperate forests, which suggests that CNDD influences species abundances more strongly in tropical forests than it does in temperate ones13. We also found that interspecific variation in CNDD, which might attenuate its stabilizing effect on species diversity14,15, was high but not significantly different across latitudes. Although the consequences of these patterns for latitudinal diversity gradients are difficult to evaluate, we speculate that a more effective regulation of population abundances could translate into greater stabilization of tropical tree communities and thus contribute to the high local diversity of tropical forests.

RESUMEN

Acoustically actuated magnetoelectric (ME) antennas utilize acoustic wave resonance to complete the process of receiving and transmitting signals, which promotes the development of antenna miniaturization technology. This paper presents a bilayer magnetostrictive/AlN ME laminated antenna. The proposed laminated antenna uses the FeGa/FeGaB bilayer materials as magnetostrictive materials, which combine the advantages of soft magnetic properties of FeGa and the low loss of FeGaB. First, multiphysics modeling and analysis are performed for the proposed ME laminated antenna by finite element method (FEM). The positive/inverse ME effects and the influences of the volume ratio of the FeGa/FeGaB bilayer on the antenna performance are studied. The results show that the output voltage and ME coefficient of the FeGa/FeGaB bilayer magnetostrictive material with a volume ratio of 1:1 are 3.97 times and 195.8% higher than that of the single FeGaB layer, respectively. The eddy current loss is 52.08% lower than that of single-layer FeGa. According to the surface equivalence principle, the far-field radiation process is simulated. The results show that the gain of the ME antenna is 15 dB larger than that of the same-size micro-loop antenna, and the gain of the ME antenna is about -44.9 dB. The improved performance and magnetic tunability of the proposed bilayer magnetostrictive materials make ME antennas excellent candidates for portable devices and implantable medical devices.

RESUMEN

An AA'3B2B'2O12-type quadruple perovskite oxide of CaCu3Cr2Re2O12 was synthesized at 18 GPa and 1373 K. Both an A- and B-site ordered quadruple perovskite crystal structure was observed, with the space group Pn-3. The valence states are verified to be CaCu32+Cr23+Re25+O12 by bond valence sum calculations and synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The spin interaction among Cu2+, Cr3+, and Re5+ generates a ferrimagnetic transition with the Curie temperature (TC) at about 360 K. Moreover, electric transport properties and specific heat data suggest the presence of a half-metallic feature for this compound. The present study provides a promising quadruple perovskite oxide with above-room-temperature ferrimagnetism and possible half-metallic properties, which shows potential in the usage of spintronic devices.

RESUMEN

Electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia offers an attractive solution to environmental sustainability and clean energy production but suffers from the sluggish *NO hydrogenation with the spin-state transitions. Herein, we report that the manipulation of oxygen vacancies can contrive spin-polarized Fe1-Ti pairs on monolithic titanium electrode that exhibits an attractive NH3 yield rate of 272,000 µg h-1 mgFe-1 and a high NH3 Faradic efficiency of 95.2% at -0.4 V vs. RHE, far superior to the counterpart with spin-depressed Fe1-Ti pairs (51000 µg h-1 mgFe-1) and the mostly reported electrocatalysts. The unpaired spin electrons of Fe and Ti atoms can effectively interact with the key intermediates, facilitating the *NO hydrogenation. Coupling a flow-through electrolyzer with a membrane-based NH3 recovery unit, the simultaneous nitrate reduction and NH3 recovery was realized. This work offers a pioneering strategy for manipulating spin polarization of electrocatalysts within pair sites for nitrate wastewater treatment.

RESUMEN

Materials with negative thermal expansion (NTE) attract significant research attention owing to their unique physical properties and promising applications. Although ferroelectric phase transitions leading to NTE are widely investigated, information on antiferroelectricity-induced NTE remains limited. In this study, single-crystal and polycrystalline Pb2 CoMoO6 samples are prepared at high pressure and temperature conditions. The compound crystallizes into an antiferroelectric Pnma orthorhombic double perovskite structure at room temperature owing to the opposite displacements dominated by Pb2+ ions. With increasing temperature to 400 K, a structural phase transition to cubic Fm-3m paraelectric phase occurs, accompanied by a sharp volume contraction of 0.41%. This is the first report of an antiferroelectric-to-paraelectric transition-induced NTE in Pb2 CoMoO6 . Moreover, the compound also exhibits remarkable NTE with an average volumetric coefficient of thermal expansion αV = -1.33 × 10-5 K-1 in a wide temperature range of 30-420 K. The as-prepared Pb2 CoMoO6 thus serves as a prototype material system for studying antiferroelectricity-induced NTE.

RESUMEN

A critical current challenge in the development of all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) is reducing the cost of fabrication without compromising the performance. Here we report a sulfide ASSLB based on a high-energy, Co-free LiNiO2 cathode with a robust outside-in structure. This promising cathode is enabled by the high-pressure O2 synthesis and subsequent atomic layer deposition of a unique ultrathin LixAlyZnzOδ protective layer comprising a LixAlyZnzOδ surface coating region and an Al and Zn near-surface doping region. This high-quality artificial interphase enhances the structural stability and interfacial dynamics of the cathode as it mitigates the contact loss and continuous side reactions at the cathode/solid electrolyte interface. As a result, our ASSLBs exhibit a high areal capacity (4.65 mAh cm-2), a high specific cathode capacity (203 mAh g-1), superior cycling stability (92% capacity retention after 200 cycles) and a good rate capability (93 mAh g-1 at 2C). This work also offers mechanistic insights into how to break through the limitation of using expensive cathodes (for example, Co-based) and coatings (for example, Nb-, Ta-, La- or Zr-based) while still achieving a high-energy ASSLB performance.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are distressing for patients with dementia, often accelerating functional decline and nursing home placement. Medications such as quetiapine are used to alleviate NPS, but their side effects require cautious use. Liquid formulations such as quetiapine oral suspension suit specific populations; however, real-world data on their use in patients with dementia are limited. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this retrospective, naturalistic study was to provide preliminary data on the effects of treatment with quetiapine oral suspension on behavioral and psychiatric disturbances in Alzheimer's disease (AD) outpatients in Taiwan. METHODS: Between January 2022 and June 2023, data were collected from outpatients with a diagnosis of probable AD who received treatment with Qting® (quetiapine oral solution 25 mg/ml). Primary outcome measures were changes in Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) total score and its sub-items from baseline to the endpoint. RESULTS: We recruited 66 AD patients with a mean age of 72.1±7.6 years, most of whom were female (69.7%). Twenty-three patients had data on neuropsychological test and NPI scores before and after quetiapine treatment. There was no significant change in global cognitive function from baseline to the endpoint. A significant reduction in NPI total score after quetiapine treatment was noted, while the effect on NPI sub-items was limited. The average maintenance dose was 1.5±0.6 ml. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated our clinical experience of the use of quetiapine oral solution in AD patients with NPS. Our results showed that quetiapine oral solution treatment significantly improved these symptoms at a relatively low dose.

RESUMEN

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have gained significant interest in recent years due to their unique structural characteristics and potential to tailor functional properties. However, the electronic structure of the HEOs currently remains vastly unknown. In this work, combining magnetometry measurements, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and element-specific X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the perovskite-HEO La(Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2)O3 epitaxial thin films are systemically studied. It is found that enhanced magnetic frustration emerges from competing exchange interactions of the five transition-metal cations with energetically favorable half-filled/full-filled electron configurations, resulting in an unprecedented large vertical exchange bias effect in the single-crystalline films. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate that the La(Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2)O3 layer with a thickness down to 1 nm can be used as a pinning layer and strongly coupled with a ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 layer, leading to a notable exchange bias and coercivity enhancement in a cooling field as small as 5 Oe. Our studies not only provide invaluable insight into the electronic structure of HEOs but also pave the way for a new era of large bias materials for spintronics devices.

RESUMEN

Taiwan is an island and therefore has a considerable amount of coastal land. Drowning or near-drowning incidents often occur in coastal recreational areas. To reduce the risk of drowning or near-drowning associated with marine recreational activities in Taiwan, this study collected data on the risk associated with marine recreational activities. It selected risk factors using a modified Delphi panel method, with an expert panel used to obtain probability values for each risk factor. A Bayesian network for risk assessment was then established. The results of this study can serve as a reference for stakeholders involved in marine recreational activities. Severe weather conditions increase wave height and current speed, resulting in an increased risk of drowning or near-drowning when coastal recreational activities occur under these conditions. Individuals who undertake marine recreational activities without safety awareness are more likely to exhibit risky behaviors. When self-rescue ability is insufficient to prevent possible danger, the probability of drowning or near-drowning is higher. Serious incidents may lead to death, and therefore, marine recreational activities should be avoided when weather conditions are poor. In addition, the safety awareness and self-rescue ability of individuals undertaking coastal recreational activities should be improved. This study did not explore emergency response measures or postincident policy management.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The Apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon (ε) 4 allele is a well-established risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Reports on white ancestry populations have showed that age, sex, and ethnicity have different effects on the association between APOE genotype and AD. However, studies on Asian populations such as Taiwan Chinese populations are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association between APOE genotype and AD in a Taiwan Chinese population, and to explore if the association varies by age and sex. Methods: We conducted a case-control study in 725 patients with AD and 1,067 age- and sex- matched controls without dementia from a Taiwan Chinese population. Logistic regression models were used to test the association between AD and APOE genotypes. Secondary analyses considered age (<75 or ≥75 years old), and sex stratified models. Results: The risk of AD was significantly increased for people with at least one copy of APOE ε4 (OR = 2.52, 95% CI = 2.01-3.17, p < 0.001) and in a dose-dependent manner. Our results did not show an statistically significance different in AD risk when women and men carrying APOEε4 were compared. Despite not reaching statistical significance, the risk of APOE ε4 for AD was higher among younger participants (OR = 3.21, 95% CI = 2.26-4.56, p < 0.001) compared to older ones (OR = 2.13, 95% CI = 1.53-2.97, p < 0.001). When considering both sex and age, the risk of AD was higher among older men carrying APOE ε4 (OR = 2.64, 95% CI = 1.51-4.60 in men; OR = 1.90, 95% CI = 1.26-2.86 in women), while women carrying APOE ε4 appeared to have an increased risk at a younger age (OR = 3.29, 95% CI = 2.20-4.93 in women; OR = 2.91, 95% CI = 1.40-6.05 in men). Discussion: The APOE ε4 allele represents a major risk factor for AD in the Taiwanese population. The effect of APOE ε4 allele on AD risk appeared to be stronger among men aged 75 years or more and among younger women.

RESUMEN

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are typical industrial chemicals used in China. PAEs have received considerable attention because of their ubiquity and potential hazard to humans and the ecology. The spatiotemporal distributions of six PAEs in the surface sediments of the Songhua River in the spring (March), summer (July), and autumn (September) are investigated in this study. The total concentration of phthalic acid esters (∑6PAEs) ranges from 1.62 × 102 ng g-1 dry weight (dw) to 3.63 × 104 ng g-1·dw, where the amount in the spring is substantially higher (p < 0.01) than those in the autumn and summer. Seasonal variations in PAEs may be due to rainfall and temperature. The ∑6PAEs in the Songhua River's upper reaches are significantly higher than those in the middle and lower reaches (p < 0.05). Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) are the two most abundant PAEs. The ecological hazard of five PAEs is assessed using the hazard quotient method. DBP and DEHP pose moderate or high ecological risks to aquatic organisms at various trophic levels. PAEs originate primarily from industrial, agricultural, and domestic sources. Absolute principal components-multiple linear regression results indicate that agricultural sources are the most dominant contributor to the ∑6PAEs (53.7%). Guidelines for controlling PAEs pollution in the Songhua River are proposed.

RESUMEN

The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the association of general anesthesia (GA) exposure with the risk of POD in this patient population. Databases including Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane library, and Google Scholar were searched from inception to December 2022. Analysis of 17 studies published between 2015 and 2021 involving 10,678 individuals revealed an association of GA exposure with an elevated risk of POD [odd ratio (OR) = 1.846, 95% CI 1.329 to 2.563, p = 0.0003, I2 = 68.4%, 10,678 patients]. Subgroup analysis of the diagnostic methods also demonstrated a positive correlation between GA exposure and POD risk when validated methods were used for POD diagnosis (OR = 2.199, 95% CI 1.46 to 3.31, p = 0.0002). Meta-regression analyses showed no significant impact of age, male proportion, and sample size on the correlation between GA and the risk of POD. The reported overall incidence of POD from the included studies regardless of the type of anesthesia was between 0.8 and 27%. Our meta-analysis showed a pooled incidence of 10.3% (95% CI 7% to 15%). This meta-analysis suggested an association of general anesthesia with an elevated risk of postoperative delirium, implying the necessity of implementing appropriate prophylactic strategies against this complication when general anesthesia was used in this clinical setting.

RESUMEN

Background: The potential link between Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) and prognosis in patients with glioma remains uncertain. This meta-analysis was conducted to assess the clinical value of PNI in glioma patients by integrating all available evidence to enhance statistical power. Method: A systematic search of databases including Medline, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library was conducted from inception to January 8, 2023 to retrieve all pertinent peer-reviewed articles. The primary outcome of the study was to examine the association between a high PNI value and overall survival, while secondary outcome included the relationship between a high PNI and progression-free survival. Results: In this meta-analysis, we included 13 retrospective studies published from 2016 to 2022, which analyzed a total of 2,712 patients. Across all studies, surgery was the primary treatment modality, with or without chemotherapy and radiotherapy as adjunct therapies. A high PNI was linked to improved overall survival (Hazard Ratio (HR) = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.52 to 0.72, p < 0.00001, I2 = 25%), and this finding remained consistent even after conducting sensitivity analysis. Subgroup analyses based on ethnicity (Asian vs. non-Asian), sample size (<200 vs. >200), and source of hazard ratio (univariate vs. multivariate) yielded consistent outcomes. Furthermore, patients with a high PNI had better progression-free survival than those with a low PNI (HR=0.71, 95% CI: 0.58 to 0.88, p=0.001, I2 = 0%). Conclusion: Our meta-analysis suggested that a high PNI was associated with better overall survival and progression-free survival in patients with glioma. These findings may have important implications in the treatment of patients with glioma. Additional studies on a larger scale are necessary to investigate if integrating the index into the treatment protocol leads to improved clinical outcomes in individuals with glioma. RESUMEN

The rational design of novel high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries is a challenge for the development of the renewable energy sector. Here, a new sodium-deficient NASICON phosphate, namely Na3.40 □0.60 Co0.5 Fe0.5 V(PO4 )3 , demonstrating the excellent electrochemical performance is reported. The presence of Co allows a third Na+ to participate in the reaction thus exhibiting a high reversible capacity of ≈155 mAh g-1 in the voltage range of 2.0-4.0 V versus Na+ /Na with a reversible single-phase mechanism and a small volume shrinkage of ≈5.97% at 4.0 V. 23 Na solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) combined with ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) refinements provide evidence for a preferential Na+ insertion within the Na2 site. Furthermore, the enhanced sodium kinetics ascribed to Co-substitution is also confirmed in combination with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), and theoretical calculation.

RESUMEN

MFC anodic denitrification is more suitable for the coexistence of organic matter and nitrate in actual sewage, but the traditional carbon source has some problems such as high cost and difficulty of dosage control in MFC. Herein, corncob and polycaprolactone (PCL) were mechanically pulverized and mixed in the system of polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate, and cross-linked to prepare slow-release carbon source fillers (CPSP), which were added to the MFC anolyte to realize the coupling of solid-phase denitrification and anodic denitrification. Results showed the start-up period of MFC experimental group (MFC-C) with CPSP was slightly longer than the control group (MFC-0), but MFC-C's maximum output voltage (648.4 mV) and power density (2738 mW/m3) could be increased by 5% and 15% higher than that of MFC-0 (P < 0.05). The degradation process of MFC substrate in unit cycle was mainly divided into nitrogen removal stage (0-8 h) and electricity generation stage (8-48 h). The NO3--N and COD degradation and power generation kinetic processes of MFC conformed to the Han-Levenspiel model. Kinetics experiments showed CPSP can improve the affinity and tolerance of MFC to NO3--N, also it can alleviate the pressure of electron competition in anolyte and improve coulombic efficiency. In addition, microbial communities were significantly changed under the effect of CPSP (P < 0.001). Meanwhile, CPSP can promote the synthesis of denitrification functional genes. This study provides a new strategy to improve the performance of MFC by the addition of novel denitrification carbon source.

RESUMEN

The origin of insulating ferromagnetism in epitaxial LaCoO3 films under tensile strain remains elusive despite extensive research efforts are devoted. Surprisingly, the spin state of its Co ions, the main parameter of its ferromagnetism, is still to be determined. Here, the spin state in epitaxial LaCoO3 thin films is systematically investigated to clarify the mechanism of strain-induced ferromagnetism using element-specific X-ray absorption spectroscopy and dichroism. Combining with the configuration interaction cluster calculations, it is unambiguously demonstrated that Co3+ in LaCoO3 films under compressive strain (on LaAlO3 substrate) is practically a low-spin state, whereas Co3+ in LaCoO3 films under tensile strain (on SrTiO3 substrate) have mixed high-spin and low-spin states with a ratio close to 1:3. From the identification of this spin state ratio, it is inferred that the dark strips observed by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy indicate the position of Co3+ high-spin state, i.e., an observation of a spin state disproportionation in tensile-strained LaCoO3 films. This consequently explains the nature of ferromagnetism in LaCoO3 films. The study highlights the importance of spin state degrees of freedom, along with thin-film strain engineering, in creating new physical properties that do not exist in bulk materials.
